Collection Exhibition II

What Is the Avant-Garde?

October 20, 2026 – February 23, 2027

Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art, Kobe

About the exhibition

A collection exhibition on the theme of the avant-garde. In 1986 the Centre Pompidou in Paris held Japon des avant-gardes 1910–1970, with loans from the museum, then the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Modern Art, and from artists and collectors in the Hanshin area.

Forty years on, this exhibition draws on the museum’s collection, limited to art and photography and including works shown in Paris, and follows the 1986 exhibition’s structure in six chapters. Works change during the run.

In the first half of the run, through December 13, Gallery 6 on the second floor shows Japanese-style painting and calligraphy on the exhibition’s theme.
